Industrial scenes for TAFE Queensland ‘Why Wait to Make Great?’ 2017 Summer Enrolment Campaign

We recently produced, propped, styled and shot over 40 industrial scenes for TAFE Queensland’s new campaign.

The imagery takes the viewer forward in time once a student has graduated TAFE training, out into authentic scenes in various professional fields.

Here are some select images from the campaign, which rolled out across outdoor, digital and social.

Sun Super commissions The Ol’ Boys project to lead new print campaign

I was honoured when James Burchill at Rumble showed financial services brand Sun Super The Ol’ Boys and suggested they commission the works for their new print campaign. It’s a wonderful feeling to have work come directly out of personal projects. We recreated 5 new The Ol’ Boys portraits especially for them.

This campaign is out now and it’s nice to see them printed very large in some very prominent places.

Billy Cross for The Weekend Australian

Had the pleasure of photographing performer turned-entertainment mogul Billy Cross for the cover of The Weekend Australian. We did a range of images in studio and around his home. Billy was a great subject who put a lot of energy into our shoot and the results show. The cover is a nod back to his performing days in male review Manpower. There were so many great images that could have been used. Here’s the cover and insert page along with one of my favs. What a great afternoon

True Disbeliever

I can’t think of anyone I’ve met in person that I have less in common with then Senator Malcolm Roberts. He is a straight up climate change denier, which, coupled with his party’s views on immigration and multiculturalism are kind of at odds with my ethnically-diverse heritage with 2 mixed race children, & 24 solar panels on my home in my adopted country. But sometimes differences make nice pictures, and we had a nice time on this shoot. We casually discussed our differing views, with neither of us successful in changing the others beliefs, & that was that. Recently shot this campaign for NSW Health Services Union via 3rdSpace. We made these images by combining background plates we shot in hospitals, with real hospital workers that we photographed in studio.


















New Personal Project: The Ol’ Boys

The Ol’ Boys is an ongoing personal project I’ve begun about those surfers who get up for “the early”, day in and day out. A term used to describe a person who has been surfing a particular spot for a long time, The Ol’ Boys is not about people surfing, rather people who surf.

A project that I expect will go on for a long time, if not a lifetime, this collection of portraits looks to individually capture the faces of long time surfers and as a collection capture the essence of non-professional surfing.

I’ve had this project floating around in my head for years, and every time I went for a surf I’d look around and see these characters with weathered faces like timesheets telling of the years they’ve spent in the lineup. I had a particular lighting style in mind, specifically how I wanted their eyes to look. After experimenting we used a combination of natural and artificial light with reflectors to shape our subject’s faces, then recorded them on a 60 megapixel Phase One.

Big thanks to the over 30 surfers who have to date taken part, Camera Pro and L&P Photographics for the Phase One and support, the Gold Coast City Council for the permits and of course producer Kat Cooke, and assistants Josh Maguire and Orion Grey.

I’ve been carrying my Hasselblad around with me, hanging with friends or on commercial projects. I’ll bring it out if I have the time and shoot a couple frames. Man do I loooove square format, Ii just feels right, and I suspect the 45 million photos a day on Instagram agree. All these were shot on a 500c using Portra 160 or 400

Brisbane Bandits – Bigger & Badder

Worked with Art Directors Jim Strachan and Steve Schollum on a new campaign for the Brisbane Bandits baseball team.

Each year the Aussie players overseas come back over the break and a national competition is played in the capital cities over the summer.

Jim and Steve worked off the Bandit’s theme and came up with outlaw messages to tie back to the sport of baseball and we shot wanted poster-inspired mugshots of players.
